Leonardo da Vinci 2007-2009

Since the second half of 2007 Abrys Sp. z o.o., for the second time, is involved as the transnational partner in the Leonardo da Vinci project "BLES Blended Learning Environmental Science in the Field of Biodegradable Waste". The contractor of this project is Bildungszentrum für die Entsorgungs- und Wasserwirtschaft GmbH based in Duisburg.

In Poland about 4 million tons of biological waste are generated in one year. Every one of us produces biological waste every day. As a matter of fact 150 million tons of organic waste is generated in the whole European community in one year. In many countries the major part of it will be deposited on landfills and so be discharged from the recycling circuit and the closed loop economy.
In times of dwindling energy resources and energy saving demands we have to find alternative ways to handle this potential resource of biodegradable waste.The EU-funded project BLES develops a new qualification for workers in the field of waste management, who have to manage organic waste fractions.
The aim of this project is to create and evaluate a training level, which is uniform in every European country. The qualification levels in different European countries are as different as these countries themselves.
To support the growing together of Europe we have to make sure, that people are able to work in every country they want to work in. That’s why a good and comparable qualification in the field of environmental technologies has to be established.
Partners in Bulgaria, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Poland comprise the project team of BLES. The team develops 6 web-based training units. The first learning unit will start in November 2008.

Standardized European Qualification Level

In the research project “Recyoccupation”, finished in 2003, the qualification standard of the so called profession “Eco-Recycler” was created. On this basis, the BLES-Project integrates a new curriculum with the topic “Biodegradable Waste”.
At the end of the course, the participants in every partner country have the same knowledge about the contents of handling and managing organic waste fractions.
The learning units offer statistical facts about the accrual, the source, the quantity and the composition of biological waste, the natural scientific basics of chemical, physical and biological correlations of organic waste, the principles of the processes to handle waste fractions and specific technologies to collect, transport waste as well as the different treatments of biodegradable waste in the different countries.
The participants will also have a look into the basic structure of the EU legislation, the national rights and the local regulations to give a safe frame for working in this branch.

The learning concept

The course is structured according to a Blended Learning concept. That means, the participants learn on a learning platform, via Internet, and additionally attend one attendance seminar/workshop for every learning unit at a local (national) training centre. The online-units follow the principles of open-distance-learning courses. They include the learning targets, the contents with exercises and self-learn questions at the end of each unit. If the test at the end of the unit has a positive result, the learner may start with the next learning unit.
At the end of the whole course there is a written test to certify the qualification.
